Welcome to TONiC Ceramics — a small pottery studio in Hawksburn Village, South Yarra, where we make planters, vases and everyday vessels by hand. Everything's thrown here in Melbourne, then sold just downstairs at our shop, Plantonica.
Tony throws pots at the wheel. Nicole shapes pieces by hand. Two pairs of hands, one studio, one kiln.
Everything we make is small-batch and often one-of-a-kind. You'll find our planters, vases and vessels on the Plantonica shelves, alongside a small, carefully chosen selection of work by other Melbourne ceramicists we admire.
We also run private pottery workshops here — just two people at a time, in our studio, with us.

How TONiC Ceramics began
A couple of years ago, we happened to walk past a pottery class about to open, and we both said at the exact same time "I've always wanted to try that!" We tried it, got hooked, bought our own wheels and turned a room in our home into a pottery studio.
Most of what we made early on was planters, because we already had a houseful of plants that needed pots. One thing led to another, and the idea of a small space that combined the two — handmade pottery and a working nursery — went from a kitchen-table conversation to a shopfront in Hawksburn Village.
These days Tony spends most of his time at the wheel, and Nicole works mainly by hand. Different methods, same studio, same kiln. Everything you see on our TONiC shelves came out of that home-studio habit that never quite went away.

Learn with us
Our workshops are deliberately small — just two people, in our studio, for a relaxed two-hour session at the wheel. You'll work with our clay and tools, and take home a piece that we glaze and fire for you over the following weeks.
No experience needed. Just a willingness to get your hands a little dirty.
