Known as the African Milk Barrel, it is a spiny, columnar succulent native to South Africa with deeply ribbed, grey-green to bluish-grey stems and short paired spines.
It forms clumps of upright, architectural stems and produces dark purple to black flowers in spring and summer, thriving in full sun and well-drained, sandy soils. This drought-tolerant plant is low-maintenance but requires frost protection, and its milky sap is toxic and may cause skin irritation, necessitating gloves and eye protection when handling.
Available in a 165mm grow pot.
